What is SSL/TLS?

Definition

TLS (Transport Layer Security) and its predecessor SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) are cryptographic protocols that secure communication over networks. They encrypt data, authenticate servers (via certificates), and ensure message integrity.

Why It Matters

TLS secures HTTPS, email (SMTP/IMAP), database connections, and VPNs. TLS 1.3 is the current standard. Understanding TLS is crucial for configuring web servers, debugging certificate errors, and implementing secure communications.
