What is Password Security?
Definition
Password security encompasses best practices for creating, storing, and managing passwords. Strong passwords are long (12+ characters), random, and unique per service. Passwords should be stored as salted hashes (bcrypt/Argon2), never as plaintext.
Why It Matters
Weak and reused passwords are the leading cause of account compromises. Password managers generate and store unique passwords. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds a second layer of defense. Developers must hash passwords properly in their applications.
